Market prices tends to both (be) an indicator of current stress on the food security system as well as a predictor of community sentiment of future prices.  Volume purchases by those who can afford them can also be an indicator of consumer confidence of food cost and availability.

If there was a real time texting of key food commodity prices it could provide an early indicator.
